Sheffield Bladerunners I 11 - 2 Durham Spartans Line-up:
CF , C , P N. Martinez , SS , 3B , RF , 2B , 1B , LF Game Summary -
A confident start to Game 1 and explosive finish to Game 2 were all Sheffield Bladerunners Team I needed to win both ends of their 6th of June opening day doubleheader at Forge Valley School against the Durham Spartans and kick off the 2021 Northern Baseball League AA season 2 – 0.Playing under overcast skies in Game 1, a leadoff error allowed the visiting Spartans to grab a single unearned run off starting pitcher Nestor Martinez for an early lead. But in the bottom half of the first, Martinez knocked in a go-ahead run, followed in the second inning by a two RBI single and run scored, putting the Bladerunners up 6 – 1 – more than enough insurance to secure the win.Martinez netted seven strikeouts and allowed just one additional run across five solid innings. Meanwhile, seven of the Bladerunners’ ten players crossed the plate – including Alex Miles who made his return to the squad after a year absence – for an 11 – 2 victory in the five inning affair. |

Sheffield Bladerunners I 17 - 8 Durham Spartans Line-up :
2B , SS , 1B , C , P K. Sullivan , CF , 3B , LF , RF Game Summary -
With the sun finally poking through the clouds in Game 2, a now-minimally-staffed nine-person Bladerunners team took the field. With Team I’s usual starters not available, Kevin “Sully” Sullivan reluctantly took the mound. A mix of shaky tosses and some debated calls, landed eight of the Spartan’s first nine batters on base before Martinez returned in relief and secured the final out, but not before the Bladerunners had handed over six runs in the inning. Team I clawed back four runs in the bottom half of the first, buoyed by two walks of their own.But the mood turned anxious in the top of the fourth. After the first two outs, having maxed out his seven innings for the day, Martinez handed the ball over to Chris Pender. Rarely landing on the mound, Pender walked the first two batters he faced – both of whom eventually scored – before forcing a groundout to end the inning. Team I picked up just two runs in the bottom of the frame, and now, with time running out, found themselves down 8 – 6 to a Durham team with personnel frustratingly similar to the one the Bladerunners had just dominated a game before. However, Pender steadied himself in the top of the fourth for a scoreless inning, setting the stage for a potential game-ending rally. Making his first start as a Bladerunner, Michael Pomranz slapped a single down the third base line to lead off the inning, beginning an incredible display of offense for the team. Twelve consecutive Bladerunners reached base before Zak Berisford came to the plate for a second at-bat. Threatened with ejection earlier in the game, this time, Berisford chose to speak with his swing, launching a ground rule double over the Durham outfielders’ heads and knocking in Team I’s 11th run of the inning. With that, Durham had seen enough, opting for a 17 – 8 final having never secured an out in the bottom of the fourth. |

Liverpool Twojans 10 - 9 Sheffield Bladerunners I Line-up -
C , 1B , P J. Lockwood. 3B , LF , CF , SS , 2B , RF Game Summary -
The Bladerunners started aggressively in the first inning, but a foreshadowing close call at the plate prevented leadoff hitter Sean Harrison from opening the scoring. In the bottom of the frame, Liverpool’s first two batters crossed the plate to grab an early 2 – 0 lead, but starting pitcher Jack Lockwood settled, striking out two batters to end the inning. The game tightened until the top of the 4th when successive hits by the 8th and 9th batters – Miguel Juarez and Michael Pomranz – helped even the score. Unfortunately, the Twojan’s own 9th batter kicked off the bottom of the 4th with a line drive homerun over a shallow left field fence, leaving Team I’s lead short lived. But Lockwood struck out the final two batters looking, and then made the Twojan’s pay further in the bottom of the frame, launching a towering three-run homer of his own as part of a seven-run inning for the Bladerunners. With a six-run lead and time expiring, the Bladerunners seemed poised to wrap up Game I with a “W” in the bottom of the 5th, but suddenly, nothing went right. Two leadoff walks and juggled balls across the infield put Liverpool right back in it as Nestor Martinez came to the mound in relief hoping to secure the final out. With the score now 9 – 8, Chris Pender fielded a grounder at third base, whipping the ball across the diamond to a leaping Juarez at first. The Twojan’s batter inexplicably slid into the bag, and as the cloud of dust settled, the umpire called him safe – a decision that demanded VAR. Dejected, but still in line for a tie, a walkoff hit from the following batter ended the game at 10 – 9 in favour of Liverpool. |

Liverpool Twojans 18 - 11 Sheffield Bladerunners I Line-up -
C , RF , P S. Harrison, SS , CF , 1B , 2B , 3B , LF Game Summary -
Seeking to put Game 1’s controversial loss behind them, Team I got off to a blistering start in Game 2. The side batted around, put seven men on base, and took a six-run lead in the top of the first. The Twojans clawed back three runs against starting pitcher Harrison in the bottom of the frame, but the Bladerunners kept momentum on their side as both Marco Foglia and Paul Grime scored to start the second inning. However, guided by a surprisingly shirtless first base coach, the Twojans’ offense erupted in the bottom of the frame: Small fielding mistakes returned, six Liverpool players scored, and the Twojans took their first lead: 9 to 8.Far from finished, Team I battled back to go up 11 to 9 in the top of the third, but the bottom of the inning was a disappointing blur: 14 Twojans came to the plate, placing hits seemingly everywhere the Bladerunners fielders weren’t, and after three innings, Liverpool was leading 18 to 11. Zak Berisford led off the top of the fourth with a rip down the third base line, but unlike last week’s home win, in Liverpool, a comeback was not in the cards. |
